Not all Muslims are equal. Palestinians are better than Rohingya

The Malaysian government continually criticizes Israel for it's atrocities against the Palestinians (and rightly so), however it could be a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

The Government continually denies the existence of refugees in our country as their numbers swell to 43,000. Instead of addressing the issue, the government sweeps it under the carpet, and leaves it to Buddhist Malaysians to help Muslims in our country, while a so-called "Islamic" government refused to uphold the very humanity it criticizes Israel for violating.

A while back I traveled to Kuala Terenganu on my way to Perhentian Island. I blogged about the trip here.

It was there that I first stumbled across this:

A Big sign calling for the boycott of American brands because apparently America "supports" the Jewish cause.

First of all it's the Israeli cause not the Jewish cause, the same way it's the Palestinian cause, not the Muslim cause.

On the poster there's an extra bit of information which read:
MEMBELI PRODUK TERSEBUT
SAMA SEPERTI
MENYOKONG KEKEJAMAN
YAHUDI TERHADAP KEMANUSIAN DAN UMAT ISLAM
LAKUKAN JIHAD EKONOMI SEKARANG
SUARAKAN BATAHAN ANDA MELALUI KUASA PENGUNA
BOIKOT!!!
It roughly traslates to:
BUYING THESE PRODUCTS
IS THE SAME AS
SUPPORTING JEWISH ATROCITIES
TOWARDS HUMANITY AND MUSLIMS
PERFORM ECONOMIC JIHAD NOW
VOICE YOUR DISAPPROVAL BY THE POWER OF THE CONSUMER
BOYCOTT!!!

Powerful stuff, but ultimately HYPOCRITICAL.

The Banner makes it seem that Malaysia actually gives a damn about humanity, and more importantly MUSLIMS. In reality the facts don't support that claim.

Most people don't know this, Malaysia has yet to sign the 1951 Geneva Convention which protects the rights of a refugee. So don't talk about humanity, when we won't sign a simple agreement to protect and honour the rights of people who need our protection.

Under the 1951 Geneva convention the definition of a Refugee is:
1)A PERSON WHO IS OUTSIDE HIS/HER COUNTRY OF NATIONALITY OR HABITUAL RESIDENCE;
2)HAS A WELL-FOUNDED FEAR OF PERSECUTION BECAUSE OF HIS/HER RACE, RELIGION, NATIONALITY, MEMBERSHIP IN A PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUP OR POLITICAL OPINION;
3)AND IS UNABLE OR UNWILLING TO AVAIL HIMSELF/HERSELF OF THE PROTECTION OF THAT COUNTRY, OR TO RETURN THERE, FOR FEAR OF PERSECUTION."

If the Rohingya went back to Myanmar, there's no guarantee they would be safe. A country that shoots it's own monks and kills foreign journalist....this is a country we should boycott. Malaysia of course doesn't interfere with the internal matters of other ASEAN states, but we're compelled to interfere in something going on halfway round the world.

We talk about protecting Muslims, when Rohingya in our own backyard are denied their right to education and freedom.

We talk about boycotting American products when Rohingya are merely asking for their children to be educated in a normal schooling system. The same Rohingya who can speak better Bahasa than most Chinese hawkers I know are denied a right to education simply because we haven't signed the 1951 Geneva Convention.

Apparently Jewish attrocities are worse than Myanmarese attrocities. Or more specifically, the Palestinians (and nearly every other Arab) are far more important than Myanmarese.

I'm not saying Israel is right, I'm saying that we should be consisten and help the Rohingya.

Why don't we funnel Zakat money into helping them. According to the video at the end of this page there's 43,000 refugees in Malaysia, with 90% of them coming from Myanmar. If Zakat is a fund to help Muslims, why can't we use that money to help these guys?

If we can raise 7.2 Million Ringgit for Palestinian Children, why can't we raise that amount for 43,000 people in our own country?

Of course not all is lost, the Buddhist Tzu Chi and the UNHCR are helping out these refugees. Which brings me to a conclusion:

BUDDHIST Malaysians are helping out Muslim Refugees, while our so called "Islamic" government won't lift a finger.

So don't talk to me about boycotting my Starbucks Caramel Machiato in the name of upholding humanity when you're not "upholding humanity" in your own back yard.

Here's the video I promised.
